It all began on Halloween. A huge swarm of bees engulfed our back garden. Fletch and Gil , who were hanging donuts on the clothesline , called out " BEES !" and ran inside for cover. All I could think was - grr we have party guests arriving in half an hour !! :)
So the night went on relatively bee free.
And so did the next 4 weeks !! Although amidst the busyness of daily life I do remember hearing little voices saying to me " do bee stings hurt ?" and
" have you ever been bitten by a bee?"
And
" if we jump on the trampoline will it upset the bees ?"
Aaaarh ! The bees ! The trampoline ! The bees went into the compost next to the trampoline !!
" yar " from Gilbert
"I toooold you that " says Fletcher !
So I had to do something about the bees. Tony was away of course and so I had to do it on my own and I always have to do everything on my own and whine whine whine ( hee. Btw thats not true and Tony mopped the floors and vacuumed like a man possessed tonight. 1000 points to him !! :)
Anyway yesterday I flicked off the compost lid and bees went everywhere of course. Then I sprayed them with the hose !
Dont ever do that by the way !
I feel so bad. A voice told me not too!! I should have listened. I am so sorry to all those bees and their beautiful honeycomb !
So after feeling bad but still mad at the bees I decided today to try and drag the compost lid away from where it was flicked to and as I whacked at the lid with a spade to try and catch it to drag it back well ,ummm , well ... The bees went crazy and 2 stung me - on my lip and on my arm !
Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh ( I scream and run inside and shut my bedroom door and look for stingers and stress out ! :)
Tony hears me ( oh yeah he is home today after flying all night on a bad flight, had sat in the middle of the plane which when it landed was stuck on the runway for an hour waiting for a berth ,so that meant he missed his connecting flight and had had a bad week coz he missed sailing here and blah blah and he didn't want to deal with the bees just yet !! so that's why I had to take matters into my own hands and - breath ...)
Tony hears me scream and run and kindly asks if I am ok and then says
" look Bron this is how hard it is .."
And dials the beekeepers association of Tasmania and then tells me a guy will be here in an hour !!
Sigh.
So the beekeeper man was very nice and helpful and didn't go mad at me for drowning all those lovely bees and didn't laugh at me for having a fat lip (Tony ! )
So Bee lesson learned !
Maybe I will get a hive one day ?
They really are a magnificent creation.
A better way to approach a beehive ! Fully clothed and wearing a cool beekeepers hat ! :)

Sorry Bron, but I'm laughing! Have you read 'The secret life of bees'? You would enjoy it I reckon, especially after this experience...or you could just watch the movie :)
I've read it ! Gorgeous book. Pity I didnt pay any attention to their beekeeping hints : )
